2024 Chevy Tahoe vs Toyota Highlander: Which Family SUV Is Right For Me?

The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2024 Toyota Highlander are both highly capable SUVs when it comes to getting you where you want to be. Both can handle rough terrain yet deliver a smooth and comfortable ride for the driver and passengers. There’s plenty of cargo space and seating configurations to get the most out of each vehicle’s capacity, too.

When it comes to having an edge, the Chevrolet Tahoe delivers global incentives that let you get into one for less. Here’s a look at the Chevrolet Tahoe vs. the Toyota Highlander and what sets the two of them apart.

Overall Size

The biggest difference between the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2024 Toyota Highlander is their size. The Highlander is classified as a midsize SUV, while the Tahoe is a full-size SUV. This means the Tahoe has a larger engine, more cargo space, and more passenger room than the Highlander. In terms of size, the Tahoe wins out with its ability to command the road, but the Highlander is also a capable vehicle for its size and class.

Both vehicles have off-road capability and have drivetrains to help you go off-roading.

Available Trims

For 2024, these are the Toyota Highlander trim levels:

  • LE.
  • XLE.
  • XSE.
  • Limited.
  • Platinum.
  • Hybrid LE.
  • Hybrid LE Nightshade.
  • Hybrid XLE.
  • Hybrid XLE Nightshade.
  • Hybrid Limited.
  • Hybrid Platinum.

The hybrid designation on the trim level means the vehicle has the amenities and features of the regular gasoline engine model but also comes with hybrid-specific technology and controls.

The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe trim levels include the following:

  • High Country.
  • Premier.
  • Z71.
  • RST.
  • LT.
  • LS.

The LT trim package is one of the most popular because it provides a host of creature comforts and a quality sound system. It also features many of the latest driving technologies from Chevrolet.

Engines

The 2024 Tahoe features three different engine options that are sure to meet your needs and desires for power and strength. They include:

  • The 5.3-liter Ecotec V-8 that delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque with dynamic fuel management for 20 mpg highway.
  • The 6.2-liter Ecotec V-8 that delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque with dynamic fuel management to achieve 20 mpg highway.
  • The Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and 28 mpg highway.

The 2024 Toyota Highlander features two engines: one gas powered and the other hybrid. They include:

  • The 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged double overhead cam with engine stop and start that achieves 21 city/29 highway for front-wheel drive (FWD) and 20 city/27 highway for all-wheel drive (AWD).
  • The hybrid 2.5-liter L4HV double overhead cam 16-valve D-45 injection with Dual VVT-iE for 243 net hp and an electric motor that gets 37 city/34 highway.

Both vehicles have different approaches when it comes to fuel economy. Toyota is known for making SUVs that get reasonable gas mileage in comparison to their size. In contrast, the Tahoe’s fuel economy has changed little over the years, but the addition of the Duramax diesel engine gives buyers the option to get power and strength with better gas mileage.

Drivetrains

The drivetrain for the 2024 Tahoe includes a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard and comes in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with a StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control.

The 2024 Highlander has the option for an electronically controlled variable transmission and a Direct Shift-8AT eight-speed electronically controlled transmission. FWD and AWD are available as two different options.

Technology

When it comes to technology, the Tahoe and Highlander come equipped with the standards, including an infotainment touch screen with proprietary software and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Highlander also offers five USB ports and two 12-volt outlets throughout the cabin for convenient access to charging. Charging options in the Tahoe include a 12-volt power outlet, 120-volt power outlets, USB data ports, and USB ports for rear passengers.

Listening enjoyment for the Toyota Highlander comes in the form of a standard six-speaker audio system and a premium JBL sound system on higher trim levels. The Chevrolet Tahoe sound systems include a six-speaker audio system, a premium Bose nine-speaker audio system, and a Bose 10-speaker surround with CenterPoint audio system.

Cargo and Passenger Space

Both the Tahoe and Highlander have three rows of seats to accommodate a total of seven passengers and the driver for a total of eight people. The Tahoe edges out the Highlander with front seat legroom of 44.5 inches versus 42 for the Highlander. The rear legroom in the second row is 34.9 inches and 28 inches for the Highlander. However, it’s the cargo space where the Tahoe really takes the lead.

Folding down the two rear rows in the Tahoe gives you a total of 122.9 cubic feet of cargo space. In comparison, the Highlander reaches a mere 84.3 cubic feet of space. This difference is to be expected, especially because the Tahoe is much larger than the Highlander. If you need maximum cargo space, the Tahoe is the winner.

Safety

The 2024 Toyota Highlander and 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe feature similar safety systems. They also have restraint systems and air bags as standard. Some of the safety features found in both vehicles include:

  • Forward collision alert.
  • Automatic emergency braking.
  • Lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.
  • Front pedestrian braking.
  • Rear-vision camera.
  • ABS.
  • Tire pressure monitor.
  • Brake assist.
  • Cross-traffic alert.
  • Blind-spot monitor.
