Car Comparison: 2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs. Hyundai Palisade

Both the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse and Hyundai Palisade are capable, midsize SUVs for families who require plenty of interior space and a decent amount of power under the hood. But how do these three-row competitors stack up against each other, and which of the two has its nose ahead? Our SUV experts at Huffines Chevrolet Plano have taken a look at these two vehicles to give you a comparison of their key features.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs. Palisade Engine and Performance

When it comes to the all-important power under the hood, Chevy’s midsize SUV has the advantage over its Hyundai competitor. The Traverse boasts a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that puts out 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The Palisade’s V-6 manages a solid 291 horsepower, so it doesn’t quite match the Traverse for acceleration and passing power on the highway.

Gas mileage estimates for both vehicles are almost identical, with the Traverse and Palisade each achieving 27 mpg on the highway in front-wheel drive and 25 mpg with all-wheel drive. The Palisade has a slight advantage on city roads, returning 19 mpg compared to the Traverse’s 18 mpg.

Both SUVs also showcase strong towing abilities. They can each tow an upper limit of 5,000 lbs. That’s more than enough to take a family camper, midsize trailer, or boat out of town for the weekend.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs. Hyundai Palisade Cargo and Passenger Capacity

These two rivals have a relatively similar cabin layout that can seat up to eight people. However, the Traverse has a larger cargo area at the rear, offering 23 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row compared to the Palisade’s 18 cubic feet. With the third row folded flat, this space increases to 57 cubic feet in the Traverse and 45 cubic feet in the Palisade.

The standard seating setup in the Chevrolet and Hyundai features a second-row bench seat, which provides the maximum seating capacity. If you can afford to have a vehicle with just seven seats, you can make things a little more comfortable for second-row passengers by substituting the bench for captain’s chairs.

Cloth upholstery is fitted in the base trims of these two SUVs. Many luxurious upgrades are available as you move up through the trim levels, including leather seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. One notable difference is that the Traverse offers a tri-zone climate control in its base setup, while the Palisade only has a dual-zone climate control in one of its higher trims.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs. Hyundai Palisade Infotainment and Safety Tech

The infotainment systems in these two SUVs share many features. Both vehicles feature a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity in their base trims. The Traverse offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Palisade requires a USB connection for these options. There are five USB ports on offer in the Palisade and six in the Traverse. The Palisade’s 12.3-inch infotainment screen is slightly larger than the Traverse’s 7-inch display, but both vehicles have a six-speaker sound system.

As you move up through the trim lineup, the Traverse offers a 10-speaker stereo, a navigation system, and an 8-inch touch screen. The Palisade boasts an in-car intercom system and a 12-speaker stereo. Both vehicles can be equipped with wireless device charging.

The two vehicles are very well matched on the safety tech front. They have multiple driver assistance features, such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. They also feature a rear-seat alert, which reminds you to check for back-seat passengers before you exit the vehicle. The Traverse also offers Teen Driver, a setting that allows you to restrict how your Chevrolet is used by a learner driver, while the Palisade has a driver attention monitor.

Both vehicles offer an optional surround-view parking camera to give you an aerial view of your SUV as you maneuver into position. The Traverse also offers a safety alert seat, which vibrates to warn you of hazards that require your response.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs. Hyundai Palisade Pricing and Trims

These two SUVs have very similar pricing plans, with the base trims from Chevy and Hyundai having MSRPs of just under $35,000. The Palisade is available in five trims, while the Traverse has six. The range-topping Palisade Calligraphy has an MSRP of $48,900, while the Traverse High Country tops out with an MSRP of $52,000.

Stepping up from the base Palisade SE to the SEL trim adds synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable passenger’s seat. You also gain second-row captain’s chairs and a hands-free liftgate. The Limited trim adds more luxury, with genuine leather seats, a sunroof, a head-up display so you can monitor your vehicle’s performance, and heated seats throughout the cabin. Finally, the top Calligraphy trim has Nappa leather upholstery, a park assist feature, and a massaging driver’s seat.

The first step up in the Traverse from the base LS trim is the LT Cloth. This trim comes equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, wireless device charging, and power adjustments for the driver’s seat. The LT Leather trim adds genuine leather seats, a larger infotainment screen, and a power-adjustable passenger’s seat. The RS trim gets larger wheels, a household power outlet, and a navigation system. The Premier trim adds ventilated front seats, while the High Country benefits from a power-folding third row and trailer-hitch guidance for the rearview camera.

As you can see, both of these midsize SUVs are strong candidates for growing families or anyone else who needs plenty of space in their ride. However, we think the Traverse has a slight advantage, thanks to its more powerful engine, larger cargo area, and useful upgrades that make towing a trailer much easier.
